Farmhouse metal roofs in Galway's open country
Galway is farms, hayfields and long rural roads, and a lot of its houses are older farmhouses with a steep main roof, a lower kitchen ell and a porch. That's a classic metal job. The main roof sheds snow fast, which is the point, but the snow lands somewhere: usually on the porch roof, the ell or the back steps.
Standing seam suits the house itself. The clips and fasteners sit under the raised seams, out of the weather, so there's nothing in the face of the panel to work loose. If the farmhouse has collected two or three layers of shingles over the years, plan on a tear-off and some deck repair before any metal goes down. Here's how standing seam metal roofs go together.
Barn roofs and outbuildings around Galway
Plenty of Galway properties have a barn, a machine shed or a detached garage, and many of those already wear ribbed metal from a long time ago. When exposed-fastener panels leak, the cause is usually washered screws backing out, rust at the laps or an old patch giving up. The whole roof rarely fails at once.
Re-screwing and resealing can buy a barn roof a good stretch of time. When the panels have rusted through or the purlins underneath are soft, it's time for new metal. A good installer will tell you which one you're looking at instead of selling you the bigger job. Our metal barn roof page covers panel choices for barns, sheds and garages.
Camp roofs at Galway Lake
Camps and cottages around Galway Lake bring their own problems. Many were built as summer places with open rafters, little insulation and a roof deck that's seen a few patch jobs. Three things matter:
- Solid decking under the panels. Rain on metal over open purlins is loud. Over a solid deck with underlayment, most people stop noticing it.
- Condensation control. A camp that sits cold all winter and then gets heated in spring can sweat under bare panels. Underlayment and ventilation handle that.
- Timing around your season. If the camp only opens in May, book the work for when someone can be there, or get it done before you close up in fall.
Snow guards and ice dams on Galway roofs
Older farmhouses often have thin attic insulation, which means warm air reaches the roof, melts snow and refreezes it at the cold eaves. Metal sheds that snow better than shingles do, but the eaves and valleys still need ice and water barrier underneath.
Then think about where the sliding snow goes. On a farmhouse, snow guards belong above the porch, the side door and any lower roof that catches what comes off the main one. On a barn, put them above the doors you and your equipment use all winter.
